Join us for a bespoke writing retreat ahead of the Forum

To book, head to Book your Place

AEME Forum and Sheffield Hallam University are delighted to offer you the opportunity to join us for a one-day writing retreat, offered free of charge to delegates.  Time to Write will take place the day before the AEME forum – on Tuesday 2nd July 2024, 10am-5pm.

The aim is to provide colleagues attending the forum with the chance to experience a structured and supportive writing retreat, free of charge.  The session is run by Dr Emma Abson, who has been trained by Rowena Murray to be a structured writing retreat facilitator and will be a full day of dedicated writing time, supporting you to progress your writing projects.  The day will include around 5 hours of silent writing time, interspersed with opportunities to discuss your current projects with colleagues from across the sector and breaks for refreshments. We hope the day will help you to progress writing projects and foster new connections for support or even for new collaborations.

We have found these discussions result in strong research-oriented conversations and we are sure, given your shared interest in event management, that some good collaborations could come out of this.

Why attend a structured writing retreat?

  • Moore, Murphy & Murray (2010) explain the benefits of concentrated time to write. We know that writing is hard, and finding time to write as an academic is even harder.  But research has shown that writing in a contained way for short periods of time is a really good strategy to being productive.
  • Literature shows that writing retreats offer both immediate and sustained benefits (Moore et al, 2010).
  • Research also shows that academics are more successful at changing writing behaviours in social support group.
  • Blocking out a day in your calendar as ‘out of office’ allows you to carve out protected writing time, and to unplug from email / team’s / meetings and phones.

What do you need to do?

  • Whilst no preparation is required to attend the writing retreat, we would advise that you have prepared with some reading, and that you have a specific piece of work you want to get on with. The aim of the retreat is to just get you writing, so bear that in mind.
  • To make the most of out of these writing sessions, it helps to come with a specific task in mind. You could try:
    • Write or revise a specific section of a paper
    • Draft a section of a book proposal or book chapter
    • Write an abstract for a conference
    • Write 3 paragraphs of a research bid
    • Draft a research bid proposal
    • Write a section of your PhD thesis
